Downeaster study wins $600,000 grant

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which operates the Amtrak Downeaster train, has won a $600,000 grant to complete a study of line improvements.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Planning Grant program, and will allow NNEPRA to identity improvements needed to expand service, cut travel time and increase the number of daily round trips from Portland to Boston, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

Work on a $35 million Downeaster extension that will connect Brunswick and Portland is under way and is expected to wrap up by the end of 2012.
