Duplicate payments sent in error

The state is trying to figure out how 7,100 people received duplicate unemployment benefits this week.

The processing error that sent $2 million in extra unemployment payments is under investigation by the state's Office of Information Technology, which processes the financial transactions, and TD Bank, which handles the direct deposits affected by the mix-up, according to the Portland Press Herald. The duplicate payments are being reversed and notices sent to the recipients and affected financial institutions, according to the paper.

Until the problem is reconciled, some of the automation in the state DOL payment system will be removed to ensure the duplicate payments aren't made again, according to a DOL spokesman. About 37,000 Mainers were receiving unemployment benefits near the end of 2009.
