The Katahdin Paper mill in East Millinocket will shut down for most of April, furloughing up to three-quarters of its 491 workers.
A lack of orders and scheduled maintenance led to the closure, which takes effect April 9 and is tentatively scheduled to end May 4, the Bangor Daily News reported. The company shut down the No. 5 paper machine on Feb. 9, idling about 140 hourly workers for a month before calling them back on March 9. The mill's sister operation in Millinocket has been temporarily idled since September.
In other paper industry news, Wausau Paper has said it will sell its Otis mill and equipment, following Tuesday's announcement that it will close the mill permanently on May 31, the Sun Journal reported. And in Rumford, NewPage Corp. will lay off nearly 400 hourly employees for 10 days in May, citing a decrease in paper production. The announcement came two days after the mill restarted its paper machines after a 10-day shutdown that began on March 22, the Sun Journal reported. The latest shutdown is scheduled to begin May 10.
