Turner egg farm investigated

Quality Egg of New England LLC in Turner, New England's largest egg farm, is under investigation by the state for animal cruelty.

State agricultural officials searched the former DeCoster Egg Farm yesterday for evidence to support allegations that Quality Egg and Maine Contract Farming mistreated its chickens, according to the Sun Journal. The allegations come after a representative of Mercy for Animals, a national animal protection organization, worked undercover at the farm and videotaped conditions from December 2008 to February 2009. The organization filed a formal complaint with the Animal Welfare Program of the Maine Department of Agriculture on March 19, alleging that chickens were physically mistreated, forced into overcrowded cages and not given proper veterinary care.

In a statement, Bob Leclerc, a compliance manager for Maine Contract Farming, said the company "strives to provide good care for our hens and quality eggs for consumers," according to the Sun Journal. The farm has four million hens that produce more than 65,000 cases of eggs a week, according to Quality Egg's website.
