East Asian trade mission wraps up

A gubernatorial trade mission to East Asia wrapped up over the weekend in Tokyo and the Japanese state of Aomori, Maine's sister state.

Gov. John Baldacci visited with Aomori officials, while business owners held final meetings with potential clients in Tokyo, the Bangor Daily News reported. The week-long trade mission, organized with the help of the Maine International Trade Center, U.S. Commercial Services and the U.S. Embassy, sent 30 Maine business owners and government officials to Japan and South Korea to explore possible markets in those countries.

Those on the trade mission called their meetings with potential clients "immensely helpful," the paper reported. Businesses won't know for at least several months if the trade mission has had a positive impact on their revenues. In 2006, Maine exported $128.6 million worth of goods to Japan and $111.9 million to South Korea.
