ME near bottom of biz climate ranking

Maine has landed at the bottom of another ranked list of states and their business climates.

On Nov. 1, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council in Oakton, Va., released its 12th annual ranking of public policy climates for small business and entrepreneurship in the states and the District of Columbia, and Maine lands at number 47 on the list -- ahead of only Rhode Island, California, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. South Dakota tops the list as the most small-business-friendly state, followed by Nevada, Wyoming, Washington state and Florida, according to a press release.

The council compiles the index based on 31 major costs imposed on small businesses and entrepreneurs by or related to the government, including taxes, regulatory costs and health care and energy costs.
