East Coast port strikes on hold

A potential longshoremen strike over container shipments is on hold as negotiators agreed to continue contract talks through December.

In late August, some Maine retailers said they were developing shipping contingency plans in the event of such a strike, which could affect shipments to Portland and the East Coast's other major ports.

The Baltimore Sun reported late last month that the International Longshoremen's Association and the US. Maritime Alliance reached an agreement to extend negotiations past an Oct. 1 deadline to Dec. 29, a decision reached during a New Jersey meeting with a federal mediator.

The longshoremen's group previously voted to approve a strike if the contract was not successfully renegotiated by that Oct. 1 deadline.
