Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative Inc. to receive $5.9M federal loan

Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative Inc., a nonprofit consumer-owned electric utility serving parts of Aroostook, Penobscot and Washington counties, will receive a $5.9 million federal Electric Guaranteed Loan.

The funding, provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will be used to build 71 miles of distribution line and make other system improvements benefiting more than 230 customers in the cooperative’s service area, according to a press release. The loan includes $102,450 to improve electric service in Native American communities.

Nationwide, the $960 million in USDA loan guarantees will help build 3,587 miles of line, benefit approximately 17,000 rural residential and business customers, and expand smart grid technologies to rural areas in 23 states.

In Maine, USDA Rural Development has 62 employees working out of area offices in Presque Isle, Bangor, Lewiston and Scarborough and its state office in Bangor.
