Eastern transit study wins grant

A $770,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will fund initial work on development of a transit system in Penobscot County and surrounding areas.

Mobilize Maine, a development group that serves 21 communities in Greater Bangor, and Eastern Maine Development Corp. will study rural transportation needs in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo and Hancock counties in an effort to connect residents with the service centers of Bangor and Brewer, according to a press release from EMDC. The two-year feasibility study and needs assessment process will identify options for future implementation of a transit system.

Penobscot County commissioners acted as applicants for the grant, one of a total of 33 awarded nationwide, according to the release.
