The Boat School in Eastport is slated to get a new owner, after city officials approved selling the facility to Perry Marine and Construction.
The Eastport City Council voted 4-1 Thursday to sell the school and its 17-acre property to Perry Marine, a joint venture between CPM Contractors in Freeport and Morrison Manufacturing in Perry, for $300,000, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company plans to use about five acres for an 8,000-square-foot facility where it will handle tidal turbine work for Ocean Renewable Power Co. The company also plans to give about nine acres and the existing classrooms to The Friends of the Boat School, a group that had pitched a competing proposal to buy and continue operating the school. Perry Marine and The Friends of the Boat School met last week to negotiate the joint proposal. One city councilor opposed the deal and said the city should have waited until a third prospective buyer, Hinckley Yacht Co., was able to tour the property.
David Marlow of Marlow Yachts in July backed out of a proposal to buy the school and establish a marine trades program and yacht manufacturing facility.
