Holiday traffic up, not down

Despite earlier predictions, Labor Day weekend traffic rose 5.3% over the same weekend last year.

According to preliminary figures from the Maine Turnpike Authority, total traffic at the York toll plaza from Friday to Monday was 233,100, compared with 221,450 the same four-day period last year. Last week, the Maine Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Southern Maine predicted a 6% drop in York plaza traffic over the holiday weekend, citing high gas prices, a weak economic climate and disruptions from Hurricane Irene.
