Efficiency Maine awards nearly $500,000

Efficiency Maine has awarded $477,000 for renewable energy demonstration projects to 11 organizations in Maine.

Two of the largest grants of $50,000 went to Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield, which plans to install a 10-kilowatt wind turbine on its campus, and Thomas College in Waterville for an 8.3-kilowatt photovoltaic solar installation, according to a press release from Efficiency Maine, a program of the Maine Public Utilities Commission. The other grants ranged from $20,000 to $49,440 and went to secondary schools and municipalities in the state. The awarded projects were whittled from 32 proposals received in August.

The grants came from the Renewable Resource Fund, established in 2000, and the grants require a five-to-one match from the organization, according to the release. The fund this year was supplemented with federal stimulus money.
