Former Bangor manager tapped for Lewiston

Ed Barrett, the longtime Bangor city manager who resigned unexpectedly this fall, is now Lewiston's new city administrator.

Lewiston city councilors picked Barrett at a meeting last night, and said they tapped him over acting City Administrator Phil Nadeau for his extensive experience, according to the Sun Journal. Barrett will start the job Jan. 11.

Bangor city councilors in October requested Barrett resign after 22 years as the city's manager, citing a desire to take the city in a new direction. Councilors last month rejected a motion to reinstate Barrett.

In other news, Lewiston councilors approved borrowing $800,000 to pay North American Site Developers Inc. of Boston to raze the Bates Mill No. 5 building. Rumors of a casino for the site are circulating, but so far no city officials have confirmed that possibility, according to the paper.
