Efficiency Maine Trust plan OK'ed

State utilities regulators Thursday approved a three-year energy plan from the new Efficiency Maine Trust.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved the trust's triennial plan that lays out goals for the state's energy efficiency efforts over the next three years and beyond, according to a press release from the PUC. The trust, created by the Legislature last year to implement the state's efficiency and alternative energy programs beginning next month, has proposed doling out $180 million over three years to expand energy programs for businesses and residents, most of which would come from federal stimulus money and an increase in the small charge already paid by electricity consumers. The trust plans to weatherize all Maine homes and half of Maine businesses in 20 years, reduce electricity and natural gas consumption by 30% in 10 years and reduce heating oil use by 20% in 10 years, according to the release.

The plan could save consumers more than $800 million, Executive Director Michael Stoddard previously said.
