Icelandic shipping company Eimskip is seeking to promote its port connection between Portland and Newfoundland with a new sponsorship for a hockey cup series.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Eimskip, which has its North American headquarters in Portland, is paying the Portland Pirates and the St. John IceCaps an undisclosed amount of money for the Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge Cup, which extends through March.
Patrick Arnold, president of SoliDG Inc., which manages the International Marine Terminal in Portland, told the newspaper the hockey cup series can help develop Eimskip’s shipping business by encouraging the port cities to interact with each other more.
Brian Corcoran, president of Portland-based Shamrock Sports & Entertainment, which sells tickets and sponsorships for the Pirates, added that it will provide a way for company officials to break the ice with potential clients.
Eimskip moved its U.S. port of call to Portland from Norfolk, Va. in 2013. As reported by Mainebiz in April last year, Eimskip had been handling 5,000 containers and had 20 export/import businesses signed at the time. Larus Isfeld, managing director of Eimskip USA, told Mainebiz he hopes container traffic will double with a planned rail connection.
