Electricity Maine to explain rates to customers

Electricity Maine LLC, founded in 2010 as an alternative lower-cost supplier of electricity throughout the state, has agreed to notify some customers they might be paying higher-than-expected rates for their electricity.

The Portland Press Herald reported the notices would be sent to customers who enrolled or renewed service between Jan. 1 and April 30 of this year, under an agreement reached between the Auburn-based company and the Maine Public Utilities Commission. The action has been taken in response to a PUC request this spring seeking information from the wholesale power provider about advertisements the commission said were potentially misleading.

The newspaper reported the notice to customers would spell out their current rate and terms of service as well as the current standard offer rate and expiration date. Customers also had to be given the option of switching to standard offer service at no cost, allowing them at least 21 days to make that decision.

Beating the standard offer price drove the company's growth to more than 150,000 customers last year. However, CEO Kevin Dean said earlier this year that's no longer the company's strategy.
