Ellsworth forms nonprofit to spur business growth

Ellsworth leaders have unanimously voted to form the Ellsworth Business Development Corp., a nonprofit they say can negotiate with businesses, represent the city in development activity and create incentives for businesses to open there.

The Bangor Daily News reported city officials on Tuesday approved bylaws and a concept plan for the new entity. Gary Fortier, the city council's chairman, told the paper that the city will likely donate two vacant business parks to the new entity, which it could sell for its first source of income.

The entity has not yet identified board members, but city councilors have eyed potential members in business, development and philanthropy in the area.

Supporters of the new nonprofit looked to other cities with similar organizations, like Bangor, Augusta and Lewiston-Auburn.
