The Acadia School of Traditional Music & Arts, an Ellsworth nonprofit that offers workshops, concerts and school programs in Celtic-themed music and dance, will disband by the end of the year.
Founded in 2013 and best known for its annual Acadia Trad Festival, the school is closing due to “a variety of personal, organizational and logistical factors,” Executive Director Jennifer Torrance said in a letter Wednesday to supporters.
This year’s Trad Festival, scheduled for June 28 to July 3 at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, will go on as planned, she said. But later in the year, school will be dissolved.
“It has been an incredible eight years,” Torrance wrote. “We have built a community that spans the country and the world. We’ve inspired countless students of all ages to bring traditional music and dance into their lives, and to keep it there. We’ve brought programming to local schools and performance venues, infusing Downeast Maine with the traditions we so adore.
“All of this has been accomplished by a small group of dedicated volunteers, to whom we will be ever grateful.”
The Trad Festival is internationally known for its promotion of Irish, Scottish, Québecois, Acadian and Cape Breton music, featuring instruments including the fiddle, guitar, piano, banjo and more. Led by prominent musicians and teachers, this year’s festival includes 18 courses of study, nearly 200 workshops, jam sessions, concerts and dances.
