Ellsworth pot dispensary nets city licenses

The city of Ellsworth has given final licenses to Maine Organic Therapy to open its medical marijuana dispensary.

The nonprofit organization, one of five approved by the state last year to operate a total of eight dispensaries, plans to open its center by early July, according to the Bangor Daily News. The dispensary will serve patients in Hancock and Washington counties, selling marijuana grown at the organization's facility in Biddeford. The dispensary will sell marijuana products, including baked goods, from a new building on Carriage Way off Route 1. Gretchen McCarthy, manager of the Ellsworth dispensary, said about 100 patients have registered for its services. Councilors unanimously approved a dispensary license and a victualer's license, which allows it to sell food.

When it opens, the Ellsworth facility will be the second retail dispensary in the state. Remedy Compassion opened its dispensary in Auburn last month. In April, Safe Alternatives opened the state's first cultivation facility in Frenchville but has not yet opened a storefront, which it plans to do in Eagle Lake.
