EMCC to offer casino-related training

Hollywood Slots is partnering with Eastern Maine Community College to offer a new associate degree programs in hospitality and tourism to help support the casino's expansion into table games.

EMCC's Maine Hospitality Institute will train students on culinary arts and hospitality and tourism management, as well as short-term training on casino gaming, according to a press release. In November, Penobscot County residents voted to allow Hollywood Slots to add poker, black jack and other table games in addition to its slot machines. Hollywood Slots plans to add employees to run the games in the next few months, hiring up to 89 new people, 40 to 45 of whom will be dealers, General Manager John Osborne told the Bangor Daily News.

EMCC officials said the creation of the Maine Hospitality Institute was in response to local business owners in the hospitality industry expressing their need for well-trained employees. It debuted two months ago with a culinary arts curriculum, according to the paper. Casino-game training is expected to begin in January.
