EMMC, nurses union reach agreement

A second strike at Eastern Maine Medical Center has been averted, after unionized registered nurses and the hospital reached a tentative contract agreement late Thursday night.

EMMC and the union have been negotiating a new contract since last fall, and last November members of the Maine State Nurses Association held a one-day strike. The union had planned another strike May 5, but that strike was called off last night, according to the Bangor Daily News. The union, an affiliate of the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United, represents about 830 nurses at the Bangor hospital. A vote on tentative contract is scheduled for May 3.

The union said the agreement addresses its concerns over staffing, patient safety, job security and health benefits, according to the paper.
