Two grants fund byway improvements

A total of $1.3 million in federal funding will support improvements to byways in northern and Down East Maine to help attract more tourists to the regions.

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud yesterday announced that the Federal Highway Administration is giving the Maine Department of Transportation $1.27 million for work on the St. John Valley Cultural Byway and the Acadia All-American Road, according to a press release. Of that amount, $75,200 will fund preservation and promotion of seven historical sites along the St. John Valley byway, as well as increase public awareness of the region's cultural history and recreational events. The remaining $52,000 will fund beautification work along the Acadia All-American Road, adding signs, informational maps, lighting and other features.

The work is expected to attract more visitors to the areas and increase economic activity in the communities along the scenic roads, according to the release.
