Energy task force delivers prelim report

A 90-member panel tasked with preparing for energy emergencies and furthering Maine's energy independence this week gave a draft report of its suggestions to Gov. John Baldacci.

The Pre-Emergency Energy Task Force is considering neighborhood teams to winterize 5,000 Maine homes this summer, establish "warming shelters" in every Maine community, and undertake a $3 billion, 10-year effort to winterize all 477,000 Maine single-family homes, among other measures, according to the Portland Press Herald. The state plans to seek federal aid and funding from other unspecified sources.

Baldacci created the task force in anticipation of a winter of record oil prices. The panel's final recommendations are due to the governor July 15.
