Enrollment at Maine's state universities has this year halted a steady decline, university officials told the Associated Press.
From 2007 through 2011, student enrollment at the state system's seven campuses fell 7.5%, from 33,626 to 31,308, but university system officials said they expect this fall's enrollment to be almost level with last year.
According to the AP, the last time fall enrollment did not decline was in 2004.
Since 2007, full-time student enrollment has fallen for the state system by 3.6% while part-time student enrollment has fallen around 14%.
University officials developed a plan to stabilize enrollment in 2009 and told the AP that those efforts to boost enrollment – including a freeze on tuition for in-state undergraduates and, at USM, a freeze on tuition for all undergraduate and graduate students – contribute to leveling off enrollment this fall.
Meanwhile, enrollment numbers at Maine's community colleges increased 34% over the same period that the AP measured decreases in university enrollment – from 2007 to 2011.
