EPA doles out $3.8M for brownfield remediation

The federal government has awarded a total of $3.8 million to eight Maine organizations and municipalities for the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in the state.

The grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will help revamp the sites for future economic investments and environmental benefit, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. A brownfield is a property that contains a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant, which hinders the potential to reuse or redevelop the site.

Recipients of the funding are:

  • Piscataquis County Economic Development Council, Dover-Foxcroft: Revolving loan fund grants totaling $650,000 for hazardous substances and $150,000 for petroleum
  • City of Old Town: $600,000 cleanup grant for hazardous substances
  • Town of Sanford: Assessment grants totaling $200,000 for hazardous substances and $200,000 for petroleum; cleanup grants totaling $200,000 for hazardous substances and $200,000 for petroleum.
  • Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society: $200,000 cleanup Grant for hazardous substances
  • Northern Maine Development Commission, Caribou: Assessment grants totaling $200,000 for hazardous substances and $200,000 for petroleum
  • City of Rockland: Assessment grants totaling $200,000 for hazardous substances and $200,000 for petroleum
  • Washington County Council of Governments, Calais: Assessment grants totaling $200,000 for hazardous substances and $200,000 for petroleum
  • Town of Wilton: $200,000 cleanup grant for hazardous substances
