Developer George Schott, owner of 702 former Brunswick Naval Air Station housing units, plans to lease them to Navy personnel working with Bath Iron Works.
The Navy's Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair has awarded Schott a contract to house sailors working for it in the former base living quarters for 10 months beginning April 15, according to The Times Record. Schott will furnish and lease 108 units in three of the former BNAS neighborhoods left vacant by the departure of BNAS personnel. Schott told the paper the number of sailors occupying the units will vary depending on BIW's launch schedule, but it could bring the occupancy rate at the housing near the base to 97%. Schott, who closed the deal on the units last November, did not disclose terms of the contract. Brunswick Town Manager Gary Brown said the contract is good news for the region's rental market.
Once those units are leased, Schott plans to focus on the housing on McKeen Street, where he intends to buy the land underneath the housing and turn it into "mid-level entry homeownership," he told the paper. Currently, the land is owned by the Navy and under a 50-year lease to Schott, but the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority will likely obtain the land through an economic development conveyance.
