Feds to study Portland fishing industry

The city of Portland is one of six Northeast fishing communities included in a federal assessment of new regulations on the industry.

The U.S. Commerce Department is sending economic development assessment teams to Portland and five other communities in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York to determine the industry's challenges and the impact of federal regulations, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The Economic Development Administration is organizing the teams' meetings with local leaders, fishermen and others in April, and will issue a report on ways to boost the industry's viability.

Topics to be studied include the impacts of declining fishing revenues resulting from federal cuts in catch limits, according to The Associated Press. Fisheries in the Northeast are grappling with changes that took effect at the beginning of 2010, including lowered catch limits and a new management plan based on catch shares.
