A former fund accountant at Wiscasset-based CEI (Coastal Enterprises Inc.) has received a prison sentence for embezzling from her employer $365,168, which included federal funds.
Stacey A. Backman, 41, of Brunswick, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby to 20 months in prison this week for federal program and tax fraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday. She also will have to pay $365,168 in restitution.
CEI, a nonprofit financial institution that receives more than $10,000 in federal funds every year, discovered in January that Backman had embezzled the funds from 2010 to 2014, resulting in her termination.
Backman, who failed to report the embezzled income, pleaded guilty to charges in June following a joint investigation between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Wiscasset Police Department.
