Ex-credit union worker pleads guilty to theft
A former Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union employee has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $500,000 from the Brunswick-based institution.
Marsha Richard, of Topsham, pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court, and faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine, according to The Times Record. According to court records, Richard stole more than $500,000 from the credit union between November 2004 and October 2010, when credit union officials notified the police about the potential theft. Richard manipulated accounting entries for checks that members had deposited but were returned for insufficient funds, crediting her own account or accounts of family members and friends, U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II said in a release. No credit union members were impacted by the theft, president and CEO Roger Sirois said when Atlantic Regional announced the investigation in January.
Richard was a 21-year employee of the credit union and worked in card services.
