Ex-DOL head Fortman to lead Perkins Center

Former Maine Department of Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman has been tapped to lead the Frances Perkins Center in Newcastle.

Fortman, who served as DOL commissioner for seven years before resigning in January, assumes the post of executive director, effective immediately, according to a press release. Founded in 2008, the Frances Perkins Center focuses on social justice and economic security through education, scholarly research and public policy dialog. Frances Perkins served as U.S. secretary of labor from 1933 to 1945, becoming the first woman appointed to the president's Cabinet, and was the primary architect behind the Social Security Act. "Leading the Frances Perkins Center provides an opportunity for me to continue to work on the economic security issues that I am passionate about: minimum wage, worker safety and health, unemployment insurance and Social Security," Fortman said in the release.

Prior to serving in state government, Fortman was the executive director of the Maine Women's Lobby and Maine Women's Policy Center. She joined the board of the Frances Perkins Center earlier this year.
