A former Fraser Paper employee has sued the company, alleging that it violated federal law by failing last month to give workers 60 days notice of impending layoffs.
Alan Nason, 50, worked at the company's lumber mill in Masardis until he was terminated Jan. 2 along with roughly 200 fellow workers, according to a complaint filed Jan. 28 in U.S. District Court in Bangor. Nason alleges that Fraser failed to meet notice requirements outlined in the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, and seeks unpaid wages and benefits for the 60 days that he would have earned during the notice period. Nason is seeking class action status to cover all the company's laid-off employees.
William Peterson, Fraser's director of human resources, told the Bangor Daily News that the lawsuit is without merit. Fraser Timber Inc. earlier this year shut down its mills in Ashland and Masardis, which employed 201 people, Peterson said.
