Ex-newspaper editor opens PR firm

The man who for 10 years formed and expressed the official opinion of the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram has opened his own public relations firm.

John Porter, former opinion editor for the state's largest daily newspaper, formed John Porter Public Strategies to provide a full range of media and public relations services, according to a release from Porter.

The veteran journalist joined the Press Herald in 1990 as a reporter after stints with newspapers throughout New England, including one as senior editor of a business magazine in Connecticut. In his release, he credits several years as a union officer at the Portland newspaper for experience in grass-roots organizing and labor issues.

He left his Press Herald position in June after the paper was acquired by new owner MaineToday Media Inc., headed by Richard Connor. Porter says he has been using the last few months to reach out to lobbyists and other government-relations people in Maine, with whom he expects to work.

Porter is one of several high-profile former Press Herald employees who've landed in the public relations field, including former editor Jeannine Guttman, who now works for Sen. Susan Collins as communications director; Eric Conrad, former Press Herald managing editor and executive editor of the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel, who is now director of marketing and communications at Augusta-based MaineGeneral Health; and Eric Blom, former Press Herald business editor who is now vice president of public relations for Yarmouth-based Broadreach Public Relations.
