An effort to build a four-season casino resort in Oxford County has attracted investors Bob Bahre and his son, Gary, former owners of the Oxford Plains Speedway.
The Bahres, also the former owners of the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, are now investment partners in Black Bear Entertainment, the company pitching the casino, according to a press release. Bob Bahre has built housing developments across the state and owns several shopping centers in Maine. He bought the Oxford Plains Speedway in 1964 and operated it until 1986, before buying NHIS in 1990 along with his brother, Richard, and son Gary. The Bahres sold NHIS to Speedway Motorsports Inc. in 2008.
Bob Bahre said the casino, which will go before voters on the November ballot, will create jobs and generate tax revenue for the state, helping to offset the loss of manufacturing jobs in the western Maine area. Black Bear Entertainment says the casino will create more than 1,000 jobs and generate $52 million in tax revenue a year, half of which is slated to fund education in Maine.
