Ex-White House official joins governor's race

Eliot Cutler, a lawyer and former Carter administration official, is exploring a run for governor.

The Bangor native filed paperwork with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics & Election Practices to establish an exploratory committee on a gubernatorial run as an Independent, according to a statement on his website. The ethics commission website shows that Cutler would run a privately financed campaign. Cutler served as associate director for natural resources, energy and science in the White House Office of Management and Budget under President Carter and was the top White House official for energy matters from 1977 to 1980. Following his White House service, Cutler founded law firm Cutler & Stanfield, which in 2000 merged with international firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, according to his website. Cutler lives in Cape Elizabeth.

So far, a total of 18 people, including five candidates without a party affiliation, have taken out papers for the gubernatorial race, according to the ethics commission website.
