Wal-Mart is hoping to expand its store in Falmouth onto property currently home to a Regal Entertainment Group movie theater.
The national retailer said Friday it signed a lease for the property, with plans to tear down the 22,500-square-foot cinema and replace it with a 36,000-square-foot addition, according to the Portland Press Herald. The expanded store on Route 1 would total about 120,000 square feet and likely include a grocery store, and another 30 to 50 jobs could be created. There's no timeline for the project, as Regal is still a tenant on the property under a short-term lease and has not set a date for vacating the location. Regal is closing the Falmouth site as part of its strategic plan to focus on state-of-the-art theaters, according to the paper.
Wal-Mart could be forced to scrap the expansion plans if the town of Falmouth moves ahead with proposed zoning changes that would limit retail stores to 75,000 square feet. The town council will take up the proposed changes on Dec. 13.
