Maine Revenue Services reorganized

Gov. Paul LePage yesterday announced a major reorganization of Maine Revenue Services that separates policy responsibilities from operational management. Under the reorganization, Michael Allen, currently director of research and econometrics, will become the associate commissioner for tax policy and report directly to Administrative and Financial Services Commissioner Sawin Millett, according to a press release. Allen will handle policy guidance, legislative relations, public relations and research. Jerome Gerard, acting state tax assessor, will be appointed to the post permanently and handle day-to-day operations of Maine Revenue Services. LePage said the reorganization “will help ensure firm, fair and consistent application of Maine’s tax laws.” Other changes include elevating the taxpayer advocate position to report directly to Commissioner Millett, consolidating audit functions into a single division to streamline business contact, and consolidating criminal and civil investigations into one unit. All changes are effective as of today.
