F. Lee Bailey denied Maine Bar bid

F. Lee Bailey, a former defense attorney for O.J. Simpson with a home in Yarmouth, was denied a license to practice law in Maine.

The Sun Journal reported that the 79-year-old lawyer passed the Maine Bar Examination in February but was denied a license late last year in light of his work on a Florida case that resulted in the loss of his license there and in Massachusetts.

Bailey spent 44 days in federal prison and was ordered to repay millions of dollars worth of stock that he had transferred from a client's assets.

Despite a letter of support from former Gov. John Baldacci and testimony from others familiar with Bailey, the majority of the Maine Board of Bar Examiners concluded that Bailey has not recognized "the wrongfulness and seriousness of the misconduct" that got him disbarred in the early 2000 case.
