Aquaculture research gets $150K grant

A Brunswick-based company has won a $150,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation to study moving aquaculture farms onshore.

In a press release, RAS Corp. announced that the grant will provide additional funding for ongoing research with the University of Maine's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin.

That research studies the creation of a land-based aquaculture center that mimics an ecosystem where one species' waste products are filtered organically using another plant or animal, rather than mechanical systems. An organic system will cut capital equipment and processing costs by one-third, the company said.
