Fairchild Semiconductor announces layoffs

South Portland-based Fairchild Semiconductor is planning to lay off an unspecified number of employees.

Fairchild spokeswoman Patti Olson declined to provide details on how many of its 800 Maine employees will be cut or when the layoffs will occur, but did say many will be manufacturing jobs at its Western Avenue facility, according to the Portland Press Herald. Fairchild employs about 500 people at its manufacturing facility, while most of the rest of the employees work at its offices on Running Hill Road. Olson said the layoffs are a cost-cutting measure that will help the company remain competitive, strengthen its operations and plan for future growth, according to the paper. The company makes silicon chips for electronics.

Olson said additional details would be available in the next few weeks.
