Facing a $500,000 penalty, FairPoint Communications Inc. has asked Maine utility regulators for a chance to present evidence of why the company didn’t meet quality standards for its landline customers.
“There is no room for debate that FairPoint is entitled to present evidence through a properly noticed hearing in a proceeding where it is faced with the possibility of a significant $500,000 fine imposed by the state,” attorney William Hewett wrote in a filing Monday, the Bangor Daily News reported.
In September, the Maine Public Utilities Commission recommended that FairPoint pay the fine for failing to meet quality standards for its landline customers. In its report, the PUC said FairPoint's claims that a number of issues prevented the company from reaching service standards, including weather and a union strike, were invalid. Instead, the report said the company prioritized unregulated services like high-speed broadband, the BDN reported.
