FairPoint Communications is laying off 90 workers over the next several months as part of a collective bargaining agreement.
The company reported in a press release that the cuts will come from its work force in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
The cuts follow the elimination of 30 management positions across the company last month.
Jeffrey Nevins, FairPoint spokesman, said he cannot yet break down the layoff figures by location or state. Nevins said those details won't be known until the process for determining layoffs, outlined by a union contract, is completed.
According to a press release, FairPoint estimates the layoffs will result in yearly operating savings of around $11 million, which Executive Vice President of Human Resources Greg Castle said will keep the telecommunications company competitive in its market.
The 90 affected workers are expected to receive severance or incentive payments at a total amount between $5 million and $8 million.
FairPoint currently has 3,300 employees in 17 states; 1,200 of those employees work in Maine with more than 700 in the greater Portland area.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that FairPoint is prohibited from revealing state-by-state layoff totals at this point. Rather, those totals await the completion of a contract-mandated process to determine who is laid off. The story has been updated accordingly.
