Falmouth planners OK bigger Walmart

Falmouth planning officials have approved an expansion of the Walmart store on Route 1.

An existing Regal Cinemas, which is closing, will be demolished to accommodate the expansion of the 92,000-square-foot Walmart into a 124,000-square foot Walmart Supercenter, according to The Forecaster. Planning board members expressed concerns over sidewalks, signage, parking lot lighting and landscaping, but Walmart attorney Phil Saucier said those issues would be addressed. The planning board's approval of the site plan includes the condition that Walmart enact those changes, according to the paper.

Because of its size and location on a state road, the project still needs approval from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation. State approval is expected early next year, and construction bids could be solicited by spring.
