Falmouth sets size limit on new Route 1 businesses

New businesses on a mile-long strip of Route 1 in Falmouth will have to abide by new size limits after a town council decision Tuesday.

The new rules place a 50,000-square-foot limit on any new businesses along a section of the state highway in Falmouth, the Portland Press Herald reported. In practice, the move limits the development of any new "big box" stores.

Falmouth councilors hope the new zoning law for the area that currently hosts a Walmart and Shaw's supermarket — existing businesses are unaffected by the new limits — will help resolve a high vacancy rate and promote development similar to communities that have pedestrian-friendly historical downtowns.
