Falmouth tree care company prunes residential business to grow utility services

Lucas Tree Experts, headquartered in Falmouth, has sold its lawn care and residential tree services division to a Midwestern company in order to focus on fast-growing demand from utility customers.

Lucas is a third-generation family business that employs over 550 people. It serves customers from Nova Scotia, Canada, to South Carolina.

Davey Tree Expert Co., based in Kent, Ohio, acquired the local lawn care and residential tree service division earlier this month. Terms were not disclosed.

Lucas said its leadership team put a lot of time and research into the sale decision and ultimately chose Davey Tree because of its residential focus and positive reputation for treatment of customers and employees.

“The residential work accounts for only 3% of our total business, but it was still very important to our family and our management team to find a company that would treat our Greater Portland residential customers and employees the way we would want them to be treated,” said Lucas Chief Financial Officer Art Batson III in a news release.

“We will work with Davey Tree over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition for all involved."

Davey Tree provides services nationwide and has a longstanding division in Maine. All 13 employees of Lucas Tree Experts’ lawn care and residential tree division have been offered and accepted positions with Davey Tree, which plans to honor their tenure and years of service.

The deal will allow Lucas to focus on its rapidly expanding utility division, which will continue to be serviced out of the Falmouth headquarters.

“We believe the sale allows our team to truly hone in on what we do best — utility services — and expand our utility work footprint thoughtfully and intentionally,” said Arthur Batson Jr., president of Lucas.

Lucas has been expanding its utility business organically and through acquisition.

In July, Lucas bought New England Tree Experts, of Hardwick, Vt., which primarily focused on vegetation management for Vermont utility companies including Green Mountain Power, Vermont Electric Cooperative, Stowe Electric Department and Washington Electric.

“I look forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for Lucas Tree Experts as we bring our exceptional utility services and sustainable solutions to more regions in the near future,” said Art Batson III.
