An anonymous donor has given $1.4 million to pay off the balance due on the House in the Woods Military & Family Retreat lodge in the Penobscot County town of Lee.
The lodge, which serves veterans, active-duty personnel and gold-star families, is a therapeutic, recreational and educational retreat. It uses outdoor wilderness activities to help participants share common challenges and experiences.
The outdoor experiences range from ice fishing to hunting, from kayaking to hiking, and from bird watching to moose watching.
"Thank you not only to our Christmas donor, but to veterans, supporters, and volunteers, for your dedication to the House in the Woods mission. The healing happening at House in the Woods simply would not be possible without you," Executive Director Paul House said in a news release.
Without debt on the lodge, the nonprofit organization said it can now focus solely on expanding its retreats and serving more veterans. Fundraising efforts will be directed towards sponsoring new veterans and providing an experience for them at House in the Woods.
