Located down an out-of-the-way side road in Tremont, F.W. Thurston is a family-owned business on the Bass Harbor shore, dating back to 1946 and selling fuel, bait and supplies to local fishermen, while serving as a space to purchase the lobsters that they haul in; as well as serving them up as menu items in the business’s restaurant portion, Thurston's Lobster Pound.
Now owner Michael Radcliffe and his son-in-law Derek Lapointe are seeking to establish a marina at their location, the Mount Desert Islander reported.
The two recently presented an overview of their proposal to the town’s harbor committee. The goal is to more than double the number of slips available to commercial and recreational boats at the wharf and restaurant. The slips would also be useful for service shops engaged to repair boats.
Given the amount of summer traffic the business has its restaurant alone, it seems the additional slips would be well used. In October, Radcliffe told Mainebiz the seasonal restaurant was packed all summer for 2016.
“We think it will be a good addition to the harbor,” Lapointe said of the project, at the harbor committee meeting.
