A family-owned, veteran-operated children’s gym recently opened in Suite C at 700 Gallery Boulevard, a 114,600-square-foot shopping center in Scarborough.
The Little Gym franchise is part of Little Gym International. The first location was established in 1976 by Robin Wes, who formed Little Gym International in 1992 to franchise the concept, according to a news release. Today, the chain has nearly 400 locations in over 31 countries including the U.S., Canada, China, the United Kingdom and Thailand.
The Scarborough franchise is owned by Wes Williams, his sister Jodi and her wife Acacia.
The enterprise is billed as an “enrichment and child development gym” for children ages 4 months through 12 years old.
Acacia is a pediatrician and Jodi is a former Navy officer who is nearing the completion of medical school. They settled in Maine to raise their son. Williams has a background in ski resort management. He took time off to care for his nephew while Jodi was in medical school.
“Our Little Gym will focus on creating a safe, welcoming space where kids can learn, grow, and play together,” said Williams.
The Little Gym franchise has a proprietary philosophy called “three-dimensional learning.” Classes incorporate “movement-based learning and imaginative play” that aims to enhance coordination, listening and intellectual skills. There are parent-child classes, preschool and grade-school gymnastics classes and an option to hold birthday parties there in a variety of themes that feature instructor-led games and music.
