Farms get $500,000 boost

The Maine Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $500,000 in grants to 13 farms to help them boost their sustainability.

The $518,700 in Agriculture Water Source Development Cost Share grants will help farmers build new water storage facilities and drill wells, according to a press release from Gov. Paul LePage's office. The farmers are required to match the grants with additional investment. Grants range in size from $5,218 to $80,000 depending on the project's scope and amount of cropland protected. "Providing investment support for farmers to build ponds and wells is important for securing our food supply and supporting rural farmers in our state," Agriculture Commissioner Walter Whitcomb said in the release.
