The fast-growing coffee shop chain Aroma Joe’s has relocated its headquarters from South Portland to 700 Technology Way in Scarborough, within the Enterprise Business Park.

The company was founded in 2000 and now has 113 franchise locations in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.

Aroma Joe's said its openings last year included its 100th shop, in Waterbury, Conn., and the company's first location in New York. Several additional locations are slated for development throughout the Northeast and Florida this year. The chain has 45 shops in Maine.

The headquarters, designed by Portland architectural design firm SMRT and built by Bonnette, Page & Stone of Laconia, N.H., were "purpose-built and technology-driven," according to a news release.

The 8,480-square-foot office “reflects a post-pandemic workplace design that focuses on flexibility, collaboration and employee comfort,” the company said.

With unassigned space, including lounge spaces to conference rooms, and flexible seating, the office aims to accommodate independent, collaborative and remote work. The company’s hybrid workweek option allows employees to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Conference rooms include video conferencing technology designed to accommodate remote meetings.

The unassigned structure applies to everyone — even CEO Loren Goodridge uses the open space.

In January, Aroma Joe’s leaders made their annual visit to a group of 40 family coffee farms in Honduras.

The need for a more collaborative and purpose-built HQ became apparent as the company grew, according to the release.

Executive hires since September 2023 included Marco Suarez as research and development director and David Lawler as technology director. Courtney Cheever will join the  company this month as director of operations. An executive role, director of franchise development, was created to focus on continued brand interest. Erica Tarnowski was hired in November to fill the role.

In 2021, Aroma Joe’s was eyeing a site at Portland Technology Park for its new headquarters.

The company took  a different direction, said CMO Caroline Riley.

“We were looking at various options in the Portland area and ultimately decided on our current location due to the central location, ability to customize and room for expansion,” she said.

Aroma Joe’s is among the 16% of franchise businesses nationwide that have more than 100 locations, according to the release.
