Fed aid for 3 Brownville shops, railroad left out
Federal money is heading to three Brownville businesses hit by harsh summer storms, but an area railroad employing 175 workers is ineligible for the assistance.
In total, five businesses in the area were damaged by summer storms, which did not meet the threshold of six affected businesses within a county to qualify for federal disaster aid, according to state officials. But earlier this week, $34,500 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds were designated to three of the affected businesses, all of which qualified as "microenterprises."
The Bangor Daily News reported that the summer storms brought nearly $350,000 of damage to sections of railway owned by Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Inc. The railroad, which in recent years sold 240 miles of track to the state to stay afloat, did not qualify for those funds by the same standard as the other Brownville businesses.
The company told the BDN that the storm setback has delayed infrastructure improvements it had planned for this year.
